In the early years of Melbourne's Immigration Museum being open there showed a wonderful exhibition of historical artefacts and traditional designs from Korea. In one room there was a feature of silk cloths, all used for the wrapping and presentation of gifts. The woven designs were elaborate and beautiful, all in square format approximately 750mm – perhaps significant enough to be regarded as gift-worthy in their own right – and I remember the display notes saying that the Koreans of this time regarded the elevated way in which gifts were presented as a way of showing respect for the recipient.
Perhaps this is a kind of 101 lesson for packaging design in our day and age?
